If the civil authorities come to my home and order me to evacuate because of potential flooding, am I covered?

Yes, the “Additional living expenses” coverage may apply if you are ordered to evacuate by the civil authorities, or if they prohibit you from accessing your home. Reimbursement of these expenses is subject to a maximum amount specified in your insurance contract.

How can I determine how much insurance I need?

Submitted by liam.cepelotti… on

Several amounts are offered based on certain criteria. It is important to determine the right amount of insurance for your situation. You can do this by considering, among other things, damage necessitating:

  • repairs to a building
  • replacement or cleaning of your property
  • additional expenses to relocate you
  • storage costs if work needs to be done

What does the endorsement cover?

This additional coverage covers damage caused by overflows of bodies of water, as described in the first question.

The endorsement also covers additional expenses incurred, for example, if you must relocate or leave your home because it becomes unusable, or if you receive an evacuation order.

What do I do if my 40-gallon or 60-gallon water heater is over 14 years old?

If your water heater is over 14 years old, Promutuel Insurance recommends replacing it to limit the risk of water damage caused by a leak or breakage. Since the majority of home insurance claims are due to water damage, your insurer could, for example, require you to replace the unit to maintain your coverage or suggest you add an endorsement to provide a higher deductible in case of water damage caused by a water heater leak or breakage.
