8 Golden Rules for a Stylish and Practical Mom Wardrobe
We often talk about how our bodies change with motherhood, but much less about how our clothing style changes too. After having my children, though, I quickly realized that my old wardrobe no longer really suited this new reality. Rushed mornings, little dirty hands touching everything, unexpected back-and-forth trips, and daily activities that call for both comfort and practicality have completely changed the way I dress.
But a “practical” wardrobe doesn’t necessarily mean a “boring” one. Over time, I learned that it was possible to put together outfits that are functional, comfortable and stylish, and that keep up with the hectic pace of my life as a mom.
Want to know my secret? A capsule wardrobe built around versatile, carefully chosen pieces that transcend trends. Here are my eight golden rules for creating “stylish mom” outfits that are just as easy to wear as they are quick to throw on.
1. Sort Through Your Wardrobe
A new stage of life is often the perfect time to sort through your wardrobe and reassess what still works for you—both physically and mentally. Motherhood is no exception! Making space in your wardrobe will help you better identify the clothes you find comfortable and feel most like yourself in. The goal here isn’t to start from scratch, but rather to build a wardrobe that evolves with you and suits your new lifestyle.
I like to get rid of clothes that I haven’t worn—or have barely worn—in the past six months. Some are donated to organizations, while pieces that are still in good condition are sold through online resale platforms or in consignment thrift shops to help fund my next purchases!

2. Invest in Quality Basics
Once you’ve sorted through your clothes, you’ll be able to assess what you need. A well-balanced capsule wardrobe typically has around 30 to 40 pieces in total: 10 to 15 tops, 10 bottoms, 5 dresses, 5 jackets or coats and 5 pairs of shoes.
Here, quality matters more than quantity. The goal is to find versatile pieces that can stand up to your busy day-to-day life—including frequent washing—and be mixed and matched to create a wide range of outfits.
Here are a few essentials to add to your collection: an oversized white T-shirt, straight-leg jeans, wide-leg pants, a straight-cut shirt, a loose-fitting crew-neck cardigan, a trench coat, a casual flowy dress and lifestyle sneakers.
3. Go for Neutral Colours
A good capsule wardrobe is made up primarily of timeless pieces in neutral colours. White, navy, black, grey and brown are easy and quick to mix and match. This is better suited to a mom’s often busy daily life, which doesn’t leave much room for the complicated coordination of multicoloured pieces.
For my part, I like to think of neutral colours as a base that you can add personality to with accessories, textures and a few trendy pieces.
Want to add a pop of colour? Colour analysis—the process of identifying the colours that suit you best—is a great tool for helping you find colourful pieces that enhance your wardrobe while bringing out your natural beauty.
4. Choose Natural Fabrics
In addition to being more durable than synthetic fabrics, natural fabrics may offer benefits for your health, comfort and the environment. Often more breathable, hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly, these fibres can be more sustainable choices that are perfectly suited to the active life of a mom. Clothing made from cotton, wool, linen and silk will not only enhance your appearance but also improve your comfort while potentially reducing your environmental footprint.
One Small Caveat! Not all natural fibres are created equal. To make sure you’re making the best choice, look for certifications for organic and environmentally friendly clothing, such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), OCS (Organic Content Standard) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
5. Go for Comfortable Fits
When you’re a mom, being able to move freely is essential. If you want to be able to keep up with the kids, run errands and play at the park in style and comfort, go for loose fits, elastic waistbands and styles that let you move freely. Layering is also a great way to add personality to your outfits while making it easier to adapt to the different demands of everyday life as a mom.
6. Never Underestimate the Power of Accessories
Accessories can completely change the game, turning an ordinary outfit into a head-turning fashion statement. For me, they’re a way to express my creativity and let my personality shine through. Oval or aviator sunglasses, colourful socks, resin and precious metal jewellery, scarves worn in your hair or around your neck or waist, all kinds of caps, and hobo and crescent-shaped bags are all great examples of trendy accessories you can add to your outfits for a little extra wow factor.
Promutuel Insurance Tip: Do you own any high-value jewellery or handbags? Make sure they’re properly protected by your insurance in case of theft, fire or water damage. Check with your damage insurance representative to learn about the limitations under your home insurance policy and add coverage if needed.
7. Think Practical
To keep my outfits as practical as they are stylish, I focus on the little details that make everyday life easier. For example, button-up tops such as cardigans and shirts are ideal for breastfeeding. Large bags with several compartments are invaluable for carrying all your baby essentials. Pockets have also become a must for quickly stashing a snack or pacifier.
8. Wear Outfits That Feel Like You
Finally, remember that you’ll shine more when you feel confident and comfortable in your outfits. I don’t think you need to follow every latest trend to call yourself a fashionista. Make the ones that speak to you and fit your everyday life as a mom, your own. And above all, don’t put too much pressure on yourself: there’s nothing wrong with wearing workout clothes or loungewear whenever you feel like it. (I’m in my sweats as I am writing this article.)
4 Quick Ways to Elevate Your Outfit
Sometimes, the little things can make all the difference. Here are four ways to elevate your look in just a few minutes:
- Hydrated skin: In addition to leaving your skin feeling comfortable, a moisturizer can help soften the appearance of fine lines and give your face a healthy glow.
- Light makeup: Recreate the effect of a good night’s sleep with a blush, a lightly tinted lip oil and a thin coat of brown mascara.
- Ironed clothes: While it may not be the most enjoyable task, ironing your clothes is one of the best ways to polish an outfit. I find that using a garment steamer makes the chore much less of a hassle!
- Well-groomed hair: Dry shampoo and smoothing gel are your go-to products for refreshing your hair between washes. I also have a soft spot for hot air stylers, which can create a blowout that lasts for days!
In the end, the perfect mom wardrobe isn’t one that follows every trend, but one that makes your life easier while still making you want to get dressed in the morning. Because between lunches, appointments and the countless responsibilities that come with motherhood, we all deserve to feel comfortable, stylish and completely ourselves every day.
