Car insurance: What happens when I use my personal vehicle for work?

Last updated on November 15th, 2019

YOUR CAR INSURANCE AND THE USE OF YOUR CAR FOR WORK

If you don’t notify your insurer that you’re now using your vehicle for work, here’s what happens. Your car insurance only covers the risks involved in using the vehicle for your personal needs (taking into account your place of residence, likely trips, vehicle model, driver, etc.). If you have an accident and haven’t declared the use of your vehicle for professional purposes, your insurer may not cover you or may reduce the compensation amount.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO BE WELL COVERED

- Notify your insurance representative that you’re now using your car for work.

- Your insurer will then decide whether to insure the new risks. If your insurer accepts, there may be limits to what’s covered and you may be offered additional coverage tailored to your needs.*

- Of course, these changes will be reflected in the premium for your car insurance, but will allow you to drive with confidence, safe in the knowledge that if there’s an accident, you’ll be covered.

*Some restrictions, limitations, and exclusions apply.
