The least we can say is that Promutuel Insurance’s Vice-President, Human Capital, thrives on novelty. Her insatiable curiosity for discovery drives her to broaden her horizons and seize every opportunity to step off the beaten path.

Following Isabel Portelance’s path requires a cutting-edge GPS and plenty of disk space to store all her geographic coordinates. Since earning her bachelor’s degree in industrial relations from Université de Montréal, she has been a true globetrotter. Her professional and personal journey has taken her from Montréal to London, then from Paris to Versailles, then on to Québec City andSaint-Hyacinthe before finally landing on Montréal’s South Shore.

“Change is part of who I am,” says the woman whose six-year European adventure gave her not only the opportunity to satisfy her boundless curiosity, but also “to grow and learn,” as she so aptly puts it. Above all, it gave her the opportunity to start a family. “We didn’t stick to our game plan,” she says with a wink.

A seasoned human resources specialist, Isabel is brimming with enthusiasm at the prospect of helping the teams under her leadership navigate a transformational process: “We must ensure that people are at the heart of change,” says Isabel, who believes that cross-functional collaboration is essential to success.

Given Promutuel Insurance’s phenomenal growth in recent years, Isabel believes that one of the reasons for the organization’s success is that it applies the same pace of growth to the employee experience. She has contributed to this in particular by optimizing total compensation, implementing a succession planning program for senior executives, rolling out the new work organization, and developing a new talent development model, always with the goal of improving the Group’s efficiency, performance and profitability.

Why did you choose Promutuel Insurance?

I’ve spent much of my career modernizing businesses, and I see the organization’s growth as clear evidence that transformation is part of everyday life. I don’t like the status quo, or things that stand still. Things have to keep moving!

What does “being THERE” mean to you?

For me, being THERE means supporting employees and partnering with them to help them reach their full potential, thereby fostering the Group’s growth and long-term success. It also means embodying the organization’s values in everything we do on a daily basis, both with our employees and our insured members.

Is there a quote that describes you?

This quote by Eleanor Roosevelt speaks to me in particular: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Anything is possible when you give yourself a sense of purpose, direction and a goal. The power of the mind makes dreams a reality.

A hidden talent?

To unwind and free my creativity, I paint with oils on canvas. It also helps me focus, teaching me valuable lessons about the importance of stepping back, knowing when to pause, cultivating patience and letting go.

Sweet or savoury?

Savoury, without hesitation. I love duck confit, a comforting and generous dish that reminds me of the years I spent in France.
