Getting wet for a good cause

On May 25, at the 2nd edition of the dragon boat race in Parc Johnson, the Promutuel Prairie-Valmont team braved inclement weather to raise funds for the Fondation du Centre hospitalier de Granby. Thanks to the encouragement of their captain, Philippe Leblanc-Hamel, general manager Jacinthe Phaneuf, and a cheering section of volunteers, our merry band of paddlers took up the challenge admirably. And raised a whopping $102,000 in the process!

About us

In December 2009, during extraordinary general assemblies, members of Promutuel Les Prairies, as well as those from Promutuel Valmont, approved the merger of the two organizations. It was made official on April 1st 2010 with the Finance Minister's approbation for the grouping of these two organizations, which gave legal status to the new juridical entity now known as Promutuel Prairie-Valmont. The work for the integration of the two mutual insurance associations began right after the announcement of the merger and should take about a year.

Here is a brief outline of the history of both mutual associations:

Promutuel Les Prairies

In 1868, the mutual insurance company against fires in parishes was born. This company was founded by seven mutual associations from Napierville's and La Prairies' counties. It is the work of farmers eager to join forces to protect their property.

It was not until June 14th, 1980 that the seven mutual insurance associations from the villages of Saint-Rémi, Saint-Michel-Archange, Saint-Patrice-de-Sherrington, Saint-Édouard, Saint-Cyprien-de-Léry, Saint-Isidore et Saint-Philippe merged to become the Société Mutuelle d'Assurance contre incendie de La Prairie et Napierville. At the time of the merger, the head office was located at 405C, montée Lussier in Saint-Édouard. Mr Honoré Daigneault was then appointed President and Mr Richard Paradis, General Manager.

A 1985 amendment to An Act respecting Insurance required all mutual insurance associations to adopt the name "Société mutuelle d'assurance générale". Following this amendment, the association was renamed "Les Prairies, société mutuelle d'assurance générale".

In 1995, the mutual insurance association changed its name to Promutuel Les Prairies, société mutuelle d'assurance générale, thus confirming its affiliation with Groupe Promutuel.

In August 1995, because the mutual insurance association was experiencing such a rapid growth, the Board of Directors, its President, Mr Yvan Durivage and General Manager at the time, Mrs Huguette Lord, decided to move the offices to 201, boulevard de l'Industrie in Candiac. The mutual insurance association had then over 21 employees.

In October 2003, Promutuel Les Prairies and its 30 employees moved into new headquarters in a two-story building at 48, boulevard Taschereau, La Prairie, covering an area of 5,000 ft 2 per floor and accommodating approximately 50 employees.

Promutuel Valmont

On November 18th, 1901, the assembly that would lay the groundwork for the founding of the mutual, the Compagnie d'assurance mutuelle contre le feu de la paroisse de Sainte-Anne de Stukely.

In 1901, the Forestiers' clubroom hosted the first general assembly of directors, consisting of nine freeholders, who elected Mr Stanislas Dorais as 1st President and Mr Theo Jubin as 1st Secretary.

In 1905, we numbered 239 insured members. The duration of insurance policies was five years and each insured person had to submit a premium note of $3 per $100 of insurance, also for five years. These notes disappeared in the late '70s.

In 1916, Mr Stanislas Dorais became the Secretary of the mutual insurance association and decided to install the mutual's offices in his residence in Sainte-Anne de Stukely. It remained there during 66 years.

In 1982, Mr Marc-Émile Dorais, General Manager in office at that time, had new headquarters built at 4733, rue Foster in Waterloo.

In 1992, the building undergoes a major expansion to add six offices and a conference room.

In 2007, Promutuel Valmont inaugurated its new head office located at 210, rue Lewis in Waterloo, a 14,800 ft2 surface that could accommodate more than 50 employees. Then, the mutual insurance association invested in a green building with a geothermal heating system, thereby confirming its commitment to environmental sustainability.
